Knight & Rose Café sits on the second floor of 236 Queen Street South, above the shopfronts of historic Streetsville. It was built as one long room — red velvet banquettes down the wall, walnut tables, brass sconces, a rose under glass on every table — and it runs as a café by day and a lounge after eight.
Everything is made when you order it.
Espresso is pulled to order and milk is steamed by hand for each drink. Matcha is ceremonial grade and whisked at the bar rather than mixed in advance. Chai is brewed rather than poured from a flask. Desserts are made in-house.
It is a slower way to run a café, and it is deliberate. The Rose Silk Latte — rose, espresso, steamed milk, dried petals — took a year of adjusting before it went on the board, and it is still the drink people describe when they try to explain this place to someone else.
Second floor,
Queen Street South.
Streetsville has been a village inside Mississauga for longer than Mississauga has been a city, and Queen Street South is still its main street. The door is at street level; the room is one flight of stairs above it. There is parking at the back of the café, and a large amount of paid municipal parking close by.
A café until eight.
A lounge after.
Through the afternoon the booths belong to laptops, students and long conversations. After eight the lights drop and the same room reads differently. The full menu runs the whole way to close — which is midnight most nights, and 1 AM from Friday to Sunday.
